Living in France – The French ‘Chocolate Sausage’ Mystery
On route to Paris a few weeks ago I was enjoying a dessert at the French Patisserie PAUL with my eldest son Thomas in Dubai International Airport, who casually asked with a cheeky smile, if I remembered the ‘chocolate sausage’ story? I laughed and said I did. Here is the ‘chocolate sausage’ story of when Thomas was only 9 years old and it was our first trip to France during Christmas 2009.
Young Thomas had been asking for a ‘chocolate sausage’ for a few days whenever we went exploring and we kept telling him that sausage rolls and pies were not a French thing and he would have to have quiche instead. He kept insisting he wanted a sausage and we kept buying him a traditional quiche, which after a chest fallen glance in his patisserie bag, he would eat.
This day we headed to le vieux ville (the old town) of Saint Brieuc with its ancient cobbled streets and elegant stores to make a few purchases and enjoy the Christmas store decorations and mini market. After having enough of the bitter cold we headed to the cramped, but cosy, Maison Diener for a light lunch.
After lunch, asking each child to go choose their dessert from the brightly filled display cabinet, Thomas excitedly fidgeted and said he wanted that ‘chocolate sausage’ right there – the long one! What, he’d found a sausage roll after all in France? But non, it was a chocolate éclair!

Chocolate Éclair
So with Thomas enjoying his long chocolate éclair and firmly grasping his little paper box with another smaller éclair to eat later at home, we all smiled and felt very happy for him (and to be honest I also felt a little bit guilty about having got this wrong previously).
However, with Thomas fondly remembering this story, I know no long term harm has come of the misunderstanding and he still loves éclairs. As you no doubt guessed, he was eating a chocolate éclair at PAUL patisserie when he mentioned the story, and from these few photos you can see that he has enjoyed many since.
