October is National Dessert Month
A whole month celebrating cakes, cookies, pies, tartes, flans and ice-cream sounds amazing doesn't it. Well, that's what we can all do for the whole month of October because October is National Dessert Month.
Of course, celebrating National Dessert Month is rather easy when you live in France because small towns and sometimes even little villages, will have their own boulangerie with tempting desserts to choose from, and when we talk about France's large cities, well the choice of pâtisseries is almost endless!

It's natural for me to take photos as I travel with my family around France and with three adult men to feed, we frequently fuel up (the human kind of fuel) at boulangeries, and so I have loads of cake and bread photos. In fact, I have whole albums full of photos showcasing the amazing skill of French bakers and artisans, so it seems just right to share some in this post about National Dessert Month.
October - 31 days of National Dessert Month
October has 31 days, so you have plenty of time to indulge in desserts and if you need to justify enjoying yet another dessert, then it's okay to say "It's National Dessert Month"! The best part of dessert is there's a kind for everyone.
Are you a fan of fruit flans, or soft sponge cakes? Do you love English Scones or French Madeleines, or maybe rose flavoured Turkish Delight? Apple Pie, or Gelato? How about rich Black Forest Cake or does simple Rice Pudding make your taste buds water? It really is mouth watering thinking about all the amazing dessert options on offer.

National Dessert Day
We're going to take a divert, only a little, and now mention National Dessert Day for all our friends in the United States who celebrate this day each year on the 14th of October. Sensibly, this day is in the middle of National Dessert Month - as if you needed any more desserts - or maybe you did!
I could not find a definitive date on when National Dessert Day was started in the United States, but it's a popular day to celebrate the last dish of any meal. In fact, the word “dessert” comes from the French word “desservir” which literally means to remove that which had been served. So when all is removed from the table, the desserts are then offered.
