The Oldest Public Clock in Paris: The Conciergerie Clock Tower

The Oldest Public Clock in Paris

The Oldest Public Clock in Paris: The Conciergerie Clock Tower

In the middle of the city of Paris, on the Île de la Cité, stands the Conciergerie. The Conciergerie, positioned on the very edge of the Seine River, and with its dramatic four towers, also houses the oldest public clock in Paris. The clock is housed, funnily enough, in the Clock Tower. If you'd like to read about the history of the Conciergerie click here for blog post Marie Antoinette’s Last Prison: A Guide to the Conciergerie, Paris.

The Clock Tower was built by King Jean II (Jean le Bon) between 1350 and 1353, on the corner of what is now the Quai de l'Horloge and the Boulevard du Palais. It rises 47 metres tall and was originally built as a lookout for the Royal Palace. Later In 1370, King Charles V commissioned a clock to be installed in the tower. The clock was designed by Henri de Vic and was the first public clock in Paris.

Brest – A Beautiful City of France

Petites Cités de Caractère in Brittany

Petites Cités de Caractère in Brittany

Small Towns of Character in Brittany, France

France is full of beautiful small villages and towns with lots of character and this is why many of us love to travel through France, watch TV shows like the Tour de France where we explore the towns that otherwise we might never see, and look at stunning photo books.

In Brittany there is even an official association of beautiful towns, the Association of Petites Cités de Caractère (Small Towns of Character) which takes the promotion of these towns very seriously.  The idea of the Association took hold in 1975, which was actually the Year of Architecture – how fitting!

Where Are You Going in the New Year?

Happy New Year to you!! Where are you going in the new year? As lots of us reflect on the past year, many of us will also think and make our plans for this new year. Part of my new year planning is listing the places I hope to visit in the New Year. Some will be favourite countries or cities, others will be never before visited places and, of course, there are always new regions of France we try to explore each trip to France.
