Beaune Hospices
Similar roof tiles can be found in Beaune, celebrated as the region's wine capital, which also boasts both the Hospices and the Festival International d'Opera as part of its attractions. One of the most famous charitable auctions in the world is also held in Beaune, The Hospices de Beaune Wine Auction.
Wine-making is celebrated at the annual fête Saint Vincent Tournante January Festival held in honour of the patron saint of the vines - try the delicious wine from the famous Roche de Solutré vineyards, or for something different sample local crème de cassis (blackcurrant liqueur). Crème de Cassis is the key ingredient used in a Kir Royale, mixed with Champagne and served in a flute glass. Read more and get recipe here - Kir Royale.
Burgundy-Franche-Comté is also home to l'Abbaye de Cluny. You can climb the wonderfully named Tour de Fromage built in the 11th century for an excellent view over the area.
The Château de Gevrey-Chambertin (top photo) is a castle located in Cote de Nuits, 12 km from Dijon and 30 km from Beaune and beautifully set in amongst vineyards.
